Well, it sure beats cottage cheese with ketchup. Dyer, who's produced several cookbooks, interviewed various Carter family members as well as Annie Mae Jones, the black cook who prepared the family meals for 22 years. The food is, naturally, as Southern as magnolias and treed possums: fried fish and chicken dinners with slaw and hushpuppies; barbecued ribs; and--Jimmy's favorites--fresh eggplant and butternut squash mashed into souffles. Also, several kinds of cornbread and sweet potato and buttermilk biscuits. Best of all are the desserts--a peach cobbler or a strawberry upside down cake. An inevitable section on peanut oddities is appended--though Dyer doesn't try to fob these off as family fare. With informal sepiatinted photos of Plains and the clan, the book has a nice laid-back air.
