Hannah's pleasure in her new red boots is a litany of delight spiced with the boots' own special sounds: ``Up and down the hallway—squish, squash, squish, squash—Hannah walks her new boots. (What a funny feeling!)'' Tugging them off, she tries ``mailing'' them in the kitchen trash, stuffs them with her toys, wears them again in her highchair, but—alas!—can't reach them after she puts them through the cat door, so they get wet in the rain. Mama and Dad save the day; the boots are clean and dry—and on again—as Hannah goes to sleep. The author captures the active, earnest toddler's enthusiasm equally well in her rhythmic text and in precisely observed pencil and watercolor art bordered with the tiny details that capture a young child's attention- -blossoms, buttons, acorns, etc. An appealing window into the toddler's world.
