JEWISH LANDMARKS IN NEW YORK

This companion volume to Landmarks of a People: A Guide to Jewish Sites in Europe has a natural designation among the 2,355,000 N. Y. Jews, half of the U.S. Jewish population, which grew- and grew- from the original settlement of four men, two women and 17 children who came here in 1654. The first half of the book is an overview of Jewish immigration, the development of their communities and institutions, their struggle for equal rights and against restrictions of all kinds, their leaders in public and cultural life. The second half- Landmarks -- itemizes places of interest -- museums, hospitals, synagogues, libraries, colleges, cemeteries, etc., as well as restaurants and special shopping features in New York proper and environs.
