Dutch New Guinea is in the news today from a vastly different angle than that designed by the author and her husband as they spent eight months completing museum contracts, of which this is the record. Nonetheless, here is as understanding a picture of living at this tip of nowhere as has come our way. First, the leisurely trip from the U. S. by boat, the crew, the food, the pets, the money troubles, and the arrival at Sorong. Then their tenderfoot trek to Sainke Doek, an inland station, where they settled down among the jungle people. Their early efforts to get acquainted, their daily life with complications of cockroaches, sand fleas, heat, rain, mud, fevers, and so on. And their joy in the slow, rhythmic life and sorrow in leaving. Gay, observant, pleasant reading -- for Land Below the Wind market, with heightened interest in the fact that it provides background for today's headlines.
