A FOREIGN POLICY FOR AMERICA

A clear, concise historical review of our attitude towards entangling alliances, as expressed by Washington, Adams, Jefferson down to our present isolationists. He recognizes the difficulties of laying down a policy when conditions are changing from day to day, but stresses the effect of a policy on specific interests at home and abroad, our national interests in the large, who formulates it and why. Blind isolationism impossible in a closely knit world, so he upholds continentalism, for the western continent first. Keen analysis of Mahan's influence upon Theodore Roosevelt, Senator Lodge and Beveridge that catapulted us into imperialism, self interest and a big navy. Our faith in internationalism and world peace foundered, along with the Kellogg Pact, the Washington Disarmament Conference and Geneva.
