A somewhat erudite and abstract treatise on whether any truth can emerge from the survey of human limitations. The conclusion is that one truth emerges:- It is possible to distinguish usually between fact and opinion, to widen knowledge of the foundations of such opinion and so prepare the way for resolving conflicts. This -- says Beard is ""the supreme contribution of contemporary histiography to the process of resolving present perplexities"". Not -- I should say -- a book for a wide general sale.
