Flash course in the science of shotgunology""- so this is defined by the author, who has written a definitive book for the shotgun fraternity. He starts out with basic principles, - how to choose a shotgun (a very personal possession), what to expect of it, what dangers lie in expecting to be able to use foreign makes with American cartridges (a very real danger in this postwar period). He describes the technical processes involved -- tells how to ""pattern test"" a shotgun; gives fundamentals of shooting style (snap shooting, deliberate swing, rapid swing). There is little new in barrels -- the variants lie in the shells. There are certain requirements for deer -- knowledge needed for flight speed of game birds, for judging distances, size, etc., for hunting ducks, for upland shotgunning. The section on handling guns and care of guns is important, particularly for beginners. The final sections deal with trap shooting, skeet, conservation and sportsmanship.
