KIRKUS REVIEW

As in Skylab (1972), Coombs writes in the present tense as if businesses and student groups are already booking space-shuttle passage. Again, he describes parts and layout (the shuttle is made up of a manned orbital vehicle which is ""a cross between an airplane and a true spacecraft,"" with an external tank and two solid booster rockets); takes a crew through lift-off and re-entry; describes some of the jobs that might be done in space (medical experiments, manufacture of frictionless ball bearings); then shoots ahead with a vision of future colonies. Another mechanical rundown, at the brochure level of inquiry.
