GOD'S GRACE IN HISTORY

The basic problem which concerns Father Davis in these three lectures is the Christian attitude toward the modern secular world. Making a distinction between ""secularization"" as the assertion of the value of the secular, and ""secular"" as an emphasis uniquely upon secular values, he treats the former to the exclusion of the latter and discusses such related questions as whether the Christian Churches are to be a party to the obviously irreversible process of world secularization, what Christianity's actual role is to be in that process, and what theological justification there is for such participation. Father Davis is well known for his lively style in advancing his liberal opinions, and God's Grace in History is an excellent illustration, not only of the subject problem, but of the author's erudition and wit. It is not likely that Davis' recent, and rather sensational, break with Rome will diminish public interest in the book.
