Again, here's the dictionary format, the nearly photographic--and very sensual--illustrations, and the helter-skelter amalgam of explicit erotica with sociological lore. A detailed chapter on ""cruising,"" for example, outlines the intricacies of the gay pickup, where there's a finely honed mating ritual to follow: establish contact, then decide whether it's to be a your-place-or-mine situation, or an I'll-call-you-later one. If it's to be the latter and telephone numbers are exchanged, the interest may indeed be there. . . or it may be a gentle put-down. What we have here is an awful lot of Joy. The players change, but the plot's the same.
