NOTES AS VICE PRESIDENT

Dawes is ""in the news"" -- so this should have a fair popular sale. It has a certain un-self-conscious charm and is a very human document -- but he loses opportunities right and left to make more of his material...These ""notes"" are in diary form, and follow the career of a man who has lived a varied and important life, and who has not shunned the spotlight. An able citizen, charitable, public-spirited, a fighter, a human being -- so he emerges from these pages, which cover only that period between June 1928 and March 1929. One misses the selective quality of straight narrative -- grows impatient with the repetition of the set pattern of each day, the brevity of mention of people and events -- but the ""Dear Diary"" moralizing is provocative and interesting, and the discussions of such subjects as the Second Reparations conference, the recurrent protest of the control of the Chamber by filibustering Senators are particularly worth while. ""Healthy"" advertising appropriation -- wide local interest to be stressed.
