THE DEVIL TAKES A HILL TOWN

What happens when God, in the person of Mr. Peebles, and the Devil, in Mr. Hooker, come to an East Tennessee Valley, hoping to find in this last outpost of Americanism some groundwork for reform. But it is a ""mean"" valley with labor troubles, fear and hatred rampant and the old time religion making little headway against the preoccupations of the hillbilly inhabitants and Mr. Peebles is forced to wipe them out. Brother Wally, torn between his worldly lusts and true call for preaching is the battle ground for God and the Devil's word battles, and the telling is rowdy, tender, robust and sympathetic -- though hot for the orthodox.
