Subtitled Great Voyages of Exploration, these 10 chapters take the reader from the trading ships of the ancient Asia Minor ports through the voyage of the submarine Nautilus. In writing of da Gama, Columbus, Cook and company, Mr. Gibson's easy essay style makes the most of the wealth of material that exists on the great explorers. This is the same style that made his Clash of Fleets (p. 368, J-134) both readable and memorable. Illustrated with photographs of portraits of the ships and men discussed and adequately indexed, the book's one lack is a bibliography for further reading. All the voyagers covered are well represented by whole books in both juvenile and adult literature.
