KIRKUS REVIEW

Readers who were happy to Meet Calliope Day (1999) will welcome the irrepressible fourth grader’s return in this tale of opposites attracting. Delighted to discover that her quiet, elegantly dressed classmate Noreen has the spine to stand up to playground intimidation, Calliope sets out to make friends. What Calliope wants, Calliope usually gets, but though Noreen doesn’t put up much resistance initially, their newly minted closeness really hits the rocks when Calliope kidnaps Noreen’s beloved (and hilariously voluble) parrot. Outgoing, strong-willed, complex, and self-perceptive enough to see—eventually—when she’s in the wrong, Calliope will bring Ramona Quimby fans flocking, to chortle as she gets herself into, and charms her way out of, one predicament after another. Illustrations not seen. (Fiction. 9-11)
