In between Stephen Leacock's conning conjurer in the opener and his amusing card trick envoi, this collection features stories of longer ago back to the turn of the century. However most of them hover around the Thirties and early Forties with Ellery Queen's Great Gordi and Clayton Rawson's Great Merlini and Walter Gibson's Great Gerard, not to mention Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's eminent Cagliostro. Or Lord Peter Wimsey's ""Elopement,"" actually an exorcism of a woman who is ""bespelled."" But on the whole no more than presto changos and most of the magicians are Greater than their annals.
