This is a slender but readable and practical collection of homilies for use during Lent. Each homily is based upon an appropriate reading from the liturgy of the day, and there is one homily for each day of the season beginning with the Ash Wednesday and ending with Maundy Thursday. (As the author points out, the liturgies of Good Friday and Holy Saturday are so complete as to make any commentary superfluous.) The book has two uses: first, as a book of meditations or spiritual reading for individual use during the Lenten season; second, as a collection of sometimes inelegant but always apposite and forceful homilies which would serve quite well either as the basis, or as the whole, of Lenten sermons. Father Herbst's work will therefore offer something of value both to the layman and the religious and to the priest engaged in pastoral work.
