A story of Alex March, Philadelphia lawyer and patriot, who with a handful of others, stood firm through the pressures at home from a frivolous wife, a father-in-law who shifted with the winds of fortune; and in the cause of Liberty, seeming often destined for failure. While the high point of the story is the ordeal of Valley Forge, it stems back to the desolate years leading up to 1776 -- and goes beyond to the abortive Battle of Monmouth and the dreary period of waiting for the French who had promised aid.
