KIRKUS REVIEW

Call 'em hillbillies or briarhoppers or Apple Asians, it ain't easy for simple folks from Kentucky in a big city like Chicago. But rats and rebuffs and rowdy kids are no match for Gramma Cantwell when she gets her mind set. With nine-year-old Lafe as her escort, she cons and cajoles the whole neighborhood into behavin' like one big happy musical family. The corn never grew this high back in Kentucky. Nosiree.
