This is a thorough-going, scholarly study of the sacred writings of the world, representative of the great cultures and religious of mankind. The exposition and interpretation given of these scriptures is designed to foster an appreciation of them as literature, as a part of our inherited culture. As Dr. Braden is one of the outstanding scholars in the field of comparative religion, he is in a position to give a comprehensive interpretation of the scriptures produced by the various religions of the world. Included in this study are the scriptures of Egypt and Babylomin, those of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Sikhs. There follows a study of the Chinese scriptures (Confucianism) and of the Persian scriptures () and, in conclusion, of the scriptures, including the Old in this field.
