A nice dog story about a Samoyed owned by a youth Roger Carter, and temporarily in training with a Vancouver division of the Mounties while Roger is away at his father's northern trading post. Large, lovable, intelligent Ranger goes through his training with Corporal Hunt. He helps when a ship on the Northwest Passage supply run breaks down on its Montreal to Vancouver trip and when some marauding Russians invade the Eskimo areas. It's a warm story as Ranger has a very warm personality and between adventures there is airing of information about the Samoyeds- a breed of Siberian sheep dog- and glimpses here and there of Eskimo life. In the end Roger returns to take Ranger home with him.
