A nostalgic feathers and fine laces novel for girls, set in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1878. This is the story of two sisters, but principally eighteen-year-old Margaret Dare, who in spite of the family's straightened circumstances, had dreams of being a fine lady, setting her heart on marrying a man with money and position. Letty, on the other hand, dreamed of a career as a nurse -- a desire frowned upon by her photographer father, hard working mother and society in general. How each girl found happiness -- Meg through learning that true love has nothing to do with elegance and social barriers, and Letty through aiding the sick in the plague and a promising friendship with a young doctor -- makes a charming story. Glimpses of Memphis social life -- formal calls, masked balls and mores.
