The story of the four expeditions sent by the King of Spain to establish missions and settlements in California, in 1769. Seen through the eyes of Pedro, a Mexican orphan, who has become cabin boy on the ship, San Antonio, and of his new Indian friend, this has library value for supplementary reading. But for good general boys' reading the dash of adventure and excitement are strangely lacking, and missions as an achievement have a limited appeal.
