The second in a series featuring Oregon's blossoming golf pro Lee Ofsted (A Wicked Slice, 1989) and her California-based policeman lover Graham Sheldon. This time out, Lee is competing in the High Desert Classic at the Cottonwood Creek Country Club in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and playing well enough to attract the attention of TV producer Boyd Marriner, who runs the American Sports Network's Golf on Tour program. Nearing victory on a golf course suddenly hit by a storm, Lee spots and tries unsuccessfully to revive lightning-struck Ted Guthrie, the club's president. The resulting damage to an already painful arm puts Lee out of competition, but a job offer from Marriner to help with the TV coverage is gratefully accepted, especially since Guthrie's death has been declared murder and Lee's sleuthing instincts are in full cry. Graham arrives from Carmel and is soon working informally with his old police buddy Ruben Torres, the detective in charge of a case that's almost immediately complicated by a second killing. Lee, between assignments, talks to members and directors of the club, gathering gossip about Guthrie's powerful connections and his revolutionary plans for Cottonwood Creek. It's Lee's last-minute inspiration that solves the nearly dead-ended puzzle, while Graham's plans for the future bring new hope to their troubled romance.Lackluster detective work and flimsy motivation are debits in an otherwise pleasantly readable story, this time enlivened by a crisp portrayal of frenzied live TV sports coverage. Golfers will be enthralled.
