The authors are auspicious, the selections are variously engaging, the prospects are dubious. The stories range from Benet's droll ""O'Halloran's Luck"" to Malamud's ironic ""Angel Levine"" to Saroyan's marvelously digressive ""Seventy Thousand Assyrians."" But only a few concentrate on the ""minority"" experience per se-""we don't take colored,"" or Puerto Ricans forced into the poorest New York housing, or a recent arrival from Italy submitting to extortion--so the value of the grouping is quite limited, the quality of the writing notwithstanding.
