THE STEPFATHER

Widowed Helen Graham, with no money at all and a small, sickly son Simon to support, uneasily accepts the offer of her husband's rich uncle--a cottage in the country in exchange for visiting privileges with Simon who is to be his heir. Unknowingly, she also marries the man he has chosen for her, Maurice, who is soft and worthless. As time passes, Simon becomes calculating and secretive and resistant under the old man's influence- and both of them are haunted by the ""Gray Lady"" from Maurice's past who now makes Helen an immediate target for a long delayed dream of revenge.... While not as distinctive as her earlier books, again malevolence creates its sure suspense.
