A likable heroine in yet another tale of witchcraft in 18th-century England. Clary Brown, now ""Diamond Browne,"" daughter of a gypsy hung for rabbit poaching, is a walk-on actress of miniscule talent and the mistress of a rich nobleman, cold as linoleum. Diamond ticks him off and gets a settlement--a cottage in her old town. There she is waited upon by Sir Francis, widower of kind Lady Caroline, and another man, hateful Captain Ringham whom she believed killed her father. Of course she chooses unwisely and there's the ghastly return of Lady Caroline and a howling finish in which Diamond escapes burning by inventive histrionics. Not that many. facets but there's a glint of humor and good fun.
