KIRKUS REVIEW

A colorful and interesting account and a juxtaposition of two cultures in this story of the family's trek to Batavia in 1927 to produce and process tapioca. The Strykers learn the hard way to reconcile Pennsylvania to the Javanese mode of living- the rice diet, low movement, and a primitive world. A delightful and absorbing glimpse of another world, written with vigor and charm.
