. . . and wasn't afraid to ask -- in playground patois. Yes, the questions are often frank enough to redden the face of that mythic stork -- ""Why do gifts have tits and what do they do? Why shouldn't I say 'fuck'? How many sperms in a man's dick?"" -- but Dr. Block, who's collected these questions over ten years of teaching and counseling, believes that we can't turn back the ""sociological dock""; moreover he wants to help parents field these queries ""openly, easily, fearlessly."" He provides the necessary pony about the pertinent facts -- from anatomical details and sexual emotion to venereal disease and contraception -- but cautions that ""the values behind those facts"" are the important point. Unlike the prominent sex educator Dr. Wardell Pomeroy (Boys and Sex; Girls and Sex), Block is not an out-and-in permissivist -- for instance although he does not condemn masturbation (it's pleasurable, etc.), he wrongly indicates a ""bad"" side (which includes the possibility of mental illness from ""simple hangup to acute disease""); likewise he's rather Victorian about premarital sex (""Are you ready to be a father? To be pregnant and be a mother?""). Block divides the Q&A into three chrono-sexual groups -- Dormant Age (5-9); Awakened Age (10-14); Active Age (15-19) -- and gears his answers accordingly. An essentially conservative handbook.
