Here's a book that proved a pleasant surprise, for we expected a rather plous tone in this story of a missionary, Percy Mather, C.I.M. Instead of which it turned out to be good entertainment, a vigorous story of a man who reveals himself delightfully in the extracts from his letters and notes. English Lancashire childhood. daredevil and scamp, and his sudden realization of a call to the mission field. Of his relations with the famous George Hunter, and their joint work in Chinese Turkestan, on the borders between China, Siberia, and Tibet. The letters give one real insight into the life and the people, the food, the nights in the native huts, the fellow missionaries. Not a ""religious book"" in the usual sense, but there's a chance for a plus sale in mission study lists.
