WHEN THE WALRUS COMES

Like Will's Mammoth (1989), an imaginative exploration of what might happen if a child's drawing came to life. The narrator's creation here is a huge, round, whiskered walrus, as cuddly as a favorite teddy, as benign as Santa Claus. He and the boy sail off to a desert isle fully equipped with mischievous, playful monkeys--who Show them how to do all kinds of shenanigans that are especially ludicrous when performed by the walrus. They even ""had fun being quiet when the moon and stars came out."" Not a new idea, but Riddell's agile illustrations make the rambunctious fun delightfully witty and childlike.
