KIRKUS REVIEW

Widman's first book--an imaginative flight of fancy--is about Jacob, a shepherd boy whose sheep bound up into the meadow in the sky, where they munch on stars. Following, Jacob is concerned about Lupus, the Wolf Star, but the threat is allayed when Sirius, the Dog Stax, comes to help. Jacob uses the crescent moon first to shear his sheep and then as a basket for the wool, tossing the moon back to the sky after returning to earth with his flock. Spowart's misty-edged, sculptural forms and deep colors accented with luminous starlight are a perfect reflection of the pleasant, poetically dreamlike text.
