The unique features of Renaissance craftsmanship are stressed in this thorough examination of the objets d'art and everyday products created during this era. The detailed splendor of clothing and textiles, the elegant decoration of furniture, the sculpture and tableware, the intricate handiwork of jewelry, watches and musical instruments fully reflect many of the values and goals of Renaissance life. The advances made in weapons, ships and navigation, the advent of printing, the organization of craftsmen in their trades, place the specific artistic endeavors in a proper historical setting. The author's carefully detailed, often elaborate illustrations visualize the text. Though the book is extremely informative, it is not exciting enough to motivate the novice toward further research. Rather it functions more as a supplement to general histories of the Renaissance and will provide greater insight into the era for those with some background.
