Oliver is Edward Ardizzone's Tim with unequal opportunity: he has to create his sea-scapades in a drawing book. When first seen, the dubiously dubbed Queen Mary (the sails are ""sheets hanging out to dry""), mother carved on the prow, captain (father) asleep in the crow's nest, diver (Oliver) suspended over the sharks by his lifeline, is aground, waiting for a tug (of war) to pull her off the rocks. . . and a stream of comic hazards, rescues and repartee (""I'm in the dog house with Sponge,"" Oliver says at one point) before the family sails triumphantly into port. An impudent voyage, drawn to suit.
