The impressions of South America, by the Anglo-American author, are at once sharply witty, sometimes wicked and at all times fresh-eyed. Traveling with William Caskey, who has done the photographs and whose astringent comments add much to the book, in 1947, he visited Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina and has reproduced from his diary clear pictures of the state of flux, the feelings of the people, official and otherwise, the types of travel and the land itself. An inquiring mind, a spontaneous interest make this travelogue stimulating reading, whether it be silhouettes of companions on his journeys, portraits of refugees, foreign ministers, oil company procedure and personalities, cattle raising, literary groups, political trends, etc. Declaredly non-authoritative, this will supplement many a guide book.
