More adult than most of the recent juvenile biographies of Cook, this presents a succinct, to-the-point survey of the Pacific sailor. Cook's importance as a man whose steadfast purpose and navigational skill provided the stepping stones for both scientific and economic expansion in his three important voyages, is well indicated. So are the notably vivid adventures that marked his life and the last of which was the death as a god in Hawaii.
