THE BOXER REBELLION

This book outlines as simply and briefly as is respectable the events of that historic uprising."" The author realizes his prefatory promise to stick to the facts--""dirty, deadly, dull, repetitive, and stupid"" in any war. ""Anti-foreignism,"" which today would be called anti-imperialism, was the Chinese impulse; Boxer murders of the German foreign minister and many missionaries entrenched the foreigners' determination to stick it out. (Ironically, the kind of discrimination which the rebels found so distasteful continued inside the besieged legation quarter.) Intended for ""young people and adults who want a general understanding""--but they'll have to go elsewhere (say to Goldston) for perspective, significance, or interesting writing.
