The lives of the Pophem colonists who settled at the mouth of the Kennebec River in Maine in 1607- and in particular of young Martin Callard an orphan raised by Sir John Popham- realistically portrayed. After sailing from England, Martin's friendship with Skecoworon, the Indian who had been taken captive on a previous trip and was now being returned, helps pave the way for friendly relations and more adventure. During a settlement fraught with hardships, Martin and flighty Hal who learns a lesson in responsibility, go on explorations, and there is a large excursion to trade with Skecoworos' people. There is a hopeful Thanksgiving, too, even though the colony was doomed to fall soon.
