HE HEARD AMERICA SING: The Story of Stephen Foster

The motion picture, inaccurate and unsatisfactory as it is, nonetheless has given a certain news value to the name of Stephen Foster, and may stimulate both adult and juvenile sales for this excellent biography. All ages know a goodly number of his songs, and this biography includes not only the words but the music of a great many of them. His story was not particularly romantic nor exciting, but Miss Purdy has succeeded in making the most of the story, and has filled her background with a colorful picture of western Pennsylvania and Ohio of those days (1825-34), the life along the rivers, the period preceding the Civil War. Excellent school and library biographical material. The pen drawings strike just the right note.
