Jonathan Jacobs, a ten-year-old Kentucky pioneer boy and the youngest in a family of three sons, longs for the prestige of being a man. But Little Tuck is often frightened and as he is young, Little Tuck is often inept. Then when and Indian teaches him how to shoot a bow and arrow, Little Tuck amazes his family by protecting a bee-hive from a bear, gathering the honey, and becoming a man of means. Paul Galdone's animal illustrations in wash are up to their general excellence and the text contains a savory blend of history, adventure, and outdoor detail.
