OLD MITT LAUGHS LAST

By

Publisher: Bobbs-Merrill

Folkways of the-naive, superstitious, poverty-ridden colored people of Whooping Island, and of Old Mitt, a ""witchy woman"" whose one great trouble is her yearning to be accepted as a ""Whooping Island Liver"". Her husband a bad 'un, is involved in the death of storekeeper Ruffton, a white man with a black heart, and disappears; a talking crow takes Old Mitt under his tutelage, leads her to Ruffton's hoard hidden in a graveyard, but Old Mitt refuses to take the money and tells Mrs. Ruffton of its whereabouts. A handsome reward makes Old Mitt the envy of the community, she is sought out and eventually defeats her oldest enemy. Homely yarning, told in dialect.
