Pioneering tales are humbling -- so much is accomplished so quietly, and this has a new slant. This particular story is of a Swedish family who, having landed in New York in 1856, push on towards better land in Wisconsin, then on to Minnesota. It has great strength; though seldom exciting it will give children a fine picture of trials patiently and ingeniously overcome. With knowledge of the present day migrations towards better opportunity or away from oppression, boys and girls must be interested in the comparable struggles of earlier days. The family in this book is so closely bound together and each member of whatever age works so hard for the good of the unit that it cannot fail to inspire. The role of the traveling pastor, helpfulness towards neighbors, the desire to learn, ability to create by manual labor by long and hard work, are all well presented in this book.
