MARCHING! MARCHING! by Clara Weatherwax

Left-wing, proletarian novel, winner of The New Masses contest. A lumber town of the northwest is the scene, and the story builds the tension leading up to a strike, with the conflict of personalities, of human problems, of social problems. It is vivid arresting, disturbing sort of book -- with nothing startlingly new either in concept or execution. But -- searching the memory, it stands out above most of its fellows, and brackets with Robert Cantwell's The Land of Plenty in its terse, vigorous, staccato method of cross sectioning the events and characters with which it deals.
