KIRKUS REVIEW

Slim reading for those who like psychological novels, -- the study of a man of culture losing himself and finding himself again in nature. The accident which cost the life of the wife he hated, and which did not lose him his life, leaves Frederic, a Grenoble manufacturer, in a state of mental perturbation. He cuts loose from business, goes back to the soil (via a farm in the Chartreuse country), finds release from self-torture with shepherds in the mountains -- and is killed.
