A Newberry cat drawing is its own justification. Bring 26 of them together and you have a really handsome portfolio of Newberry at her best. As a rhyming alphabet book, however, the other factors that go into alphabet books take precedence over the feline panorama. The illustrated letters are rather too fat to be really clear and the rhyme is less than inspired. The problem presented by ""Z"" is shared with other letters -- ""Z is for zipper and zebra and zest --/ To rhyme these with kittens is really a test/ It's also for zigzag and zero and zoo/ I still can't rhyme them with kittens, can you?"" As for the cats, they are, as usual, pettably purrfect.
