THE IMMEDIATE GIFT

As demonstrated in her previous book for this age level, (Sally on the Fence, Jan. 1, 1955) Miss Pont's interest in serious teenage thought is again evidenced in the story of Heather, handicapped by a speech defect which is greatly alleviated when she is separated from her flighty, effervescent mother and goes to live in the affectionate, calm surroundings of the Carmichael home, warmly accepted as a sister by Bruce and Lydia. Upon graduating from high school, Heather decides to become a speech therapist and her determination is shaken only when Peter Guardian, a young successful businessman, questions the necessity of a career and offers her marriage and ""the secure life"" instead. The temptation to succumb is not only lessened by Heather's own maturing beliefs, but also by her feelings toward Bruce and his friend Ron Hardy. Paralleling the romance that develops is an interesting glimpse of the work and rewards of a growing profession.
