Keeping to the standards of his other picture histories, of France and of great discoveries, Mr. Hutton again matches colored illustration with text in a way that exhibits historical accuracy with a perception that highlights important trends and makes history vital and interesting. Moving forward chronologically, the book begins with a picture of Canada and its Indian population before the Europeans came. It is a well rounded view of the different tribes and one that prepares the way for the conflicts with the whites which were to come. Canada and its many phases are all clearly defined in the following sections- on discovery, on the beginning fur trade, on further explorations and the roles church, government and civilians played, on Canada as French and then British, on relations with the U.S.A., on the opening of the West and so on to the present day. An attractive, substantial book of the kind that ought to inspire further projects.
