GEORGE ROMNEY

The second book to appear on Romney in an election year--George Harris' Romney's Way (p. 1449, 1967) is the ""authorized"" biography--Clark Mollenhoff's appraisal maintains a discreet and informative balance of fact. Mollenhoff notes that by late 1967 ""the political sharpshooters of both parties had selected George Wilcken Romney as the prime target,"" but acknowledges that the ""brainwashing"" episode whose impact Romney apparently misjudged has damaged his position at the presidential starting post. He follows his boyhood, his career, his record; with a more attentive exposition of the tatter than Harris: the tangles with Reuther, his appearance before the Kefauver Antitrust and Monopoly Committee, the Citizens for Michigan and the state constitution, the 1964 disassociation from Goldwater and the ensuing correspondence, his stands on Vietnam, stance during the Detroit riots when he was dealt ""low blows"" by the administration. Mollenhoff manages to be both affirmative and objective; for the Romney record, read this. Appendices give major speeches.
