KIRKUS REVIEW

A truthful if unattractive portrait of a young woman, self-concerned, calculating, camouflaging Naomi Martin. Living in rather shabby circumstances with her sister, her father- unfrocked and fraudulent- Naomi makes her progress towards wealth, away from happiness, as she drops Jack whom she loves, for two older men who can give her more, Harrington and Congreve. She sleeps around among the three- until Harrington's marriage, Jack's desertion when he finds her out, and her own pregnancy, force her into marriage with Congreve. A book neither for pleasure nor profit.
