Here's a writer who is gradually winning a following. I Was Jonathan Scrivener had a sucess d'estime but a small sale. This book holds more chance for wider popularity. The pattern is intriguing:- the deus ex machina of the piece is just glimpsed on the stage of the action, he is a writer whose illness brings many of the people in his life together, with the story teller, an engineer who has never seen him, but who has become interested in his aloofness through his books. A schoolmate, a thwarted woman who worshipped him and whom he disillusioned deliberately, a lovely young matron whom he saved from the brink of insanity, a red-haired artists' model who spurred him to his real work, the proprietors of the lodging house where the action takes place, -- bit by bit one pieces his story together through the contacts with these people of whose life he was a center. Good story and an interesting psychological study of a man behind a mask. Given the right push, it should have a chance for a good sale. Pick certain customers and try it out. The man can write.
