SQUIRE'S GREAT MEN AND MOMENTS IN SPORT

A sports spectacular with 150 photographs has been staged from the pages of this magazine on the premise that like a prize fight, it ""should be a crowd-pleaser"" if it comes out swinging, as it certainly does. There are no second string writers here- and along with the high vitamin sportscasting of such established veterans as Red Smith, Grantland Rice, Arthur Daley, Jimmy Cannon, Frank Scully, there are a number of participants writing about their specialty- Rickenbacker. Stirling Moss, Bobby Jones. Feature coverage (with several pieces each) goes to the prize ring, hunting and fishing, baseball, horse and auto racing, football and golf, but in the miscellany there are accounts of bullfighting, flying, the Olympics, ice hockey, polo, tennis, wrestling, boat racing, and even judo. Among the great men, Roger Kahn as fine profile of that fabulous fellow, Babe Ruthy; there's the gridiron ghost of Red Grange; the artistry of the South American racer, Fangio; Man O'War- the ""mostest horse"", and Tod Sloan, the ""greatest jockey""; and there are personal tributes too- Eric Sevareld on Hemingway, Budd Schulberg on the Negro track jumper, Johnson. All in all, a mansized collection to the taste of all men- and boys.
